If you are a foreigner living in the UK without a permanent residency permit, then you are going to have a hard time purchasing car insurance. You may be there for several months on business or have a student visa, or perhaps you are just taking a sabbatical or writing a book. Regardless, UK insurance companies do not approve of non-residents. One of the primary reasons for this is because so many other countries drive on the right side of the road, while Britain uses the left. There is no easier way to get into a collision than by accidentally turning into on-coming traffic, and it appears to be a risk they don’t want to take.
One possible alternative to buying and insuring a car yourself is simply to lease one instead. It may not be any more expensive, if you take into account the exorbitant rate you would pay for insurance should you get it. It also saves you the trouble of having to sell the vehicle before you leave. If you live in Europe you could consider bringing your own car over and driving it with your current insurance coverage—although you would need to check with the company to be sure they would let you. If you live in the city consider public transportation, or the purchase of a moped, which should be much easier to insure.
If you are positive that you want your own car, try searching online specifically for companies willing to insure non-residents. Ask them if it makes a difference how long you have been in the country. A company who won’t sell policies to someone fresh arrived may change their minds once you have a month or two of UK driving under your belt. You should be prepared to furnish them with information about your driving record where you come from, as well as the kind of vehicle you intend to purchase. It would be smart, though, to not actually buy a car until you have first priced insurance and understand just what the total cost to you is really going to be.
